Lead was used in paint commonly until 1970. After which it was used in lesser amounts through into the 1980’s. As a result, it is not uncommon for repainting of established homes has often the consequence of finding lead paint on existing surfaces. While not immediately dangerous, it can be hard to paint over and there is the concern that it might get into the environment and air as dust

In the future lead paint may become seen to be in the same light as asbestos. The same negative attributes are in play.
